The Innovation Fund (the "Fund”) by QUBIS is an opportunity for investors to invest in research-based spin-out companies form to commercialise scientific & technological research from UK and Ireland based universities and research institutes while benefiting from SEIS and/or EIS tax reliefs.

The Fund brings together QUBIS as the company mentor and Sapphire Capital Partners LLP as the investment manager, to offer an early stage, growth-targeted investment Fund.

The QUBIS vision is simple: "We aim to lead disruptive research from IP to IPO. We are excited to launch the second Innovation Fund alongside Sapphire, to enable Investors to continue in our journey to help bring these impactful technological advancements to the market and begin changing the lives of the end-users for the better."

Investment Strategy
The objective of the Fund is to invest in a portfolio of early-stage high-growth companies from Innovate UK ICURe programme which is led and delivered regionally by Queen’s University Belfast. The programme includes a large section of UK universities, many of whom are Russell Group members. Opportunities that have undertaken a similar customer discovery journey, for example, via accelerators, research institutes and Innovate UK programs may also be considered for inclusion in the Fund.

SEIS and/or EIS qualifying research based opportunities from Ireland that are expanding to the UK via one of the customer discovery programs outlined above may also be considered.

The Fund also reserves the right to consider outstanding alumni and student ventures as potential investee companies which in our experience, a faster route to market may be dictated by customer demand.

SEIS & EIS tax incentives
The companies the Fund invest in are expected to be SEIS and/or EIS qualifying, which makes the Innovation Fund by QUBIS suitable for qualifying clients who would potentially benefit from the following tax reliefs:
  • Up to 30% income tax relief (or 50% for SEIS)
  • Tax-free investment growth
  • Capital gains deferral (50% capital gains tax exemption for SEIS)
  • Inheritance tax relief
  • Loss relief
Please note: SEIS/EIS tax reliefs are only made available to investors because of the higher risks associated with investing in early-stage companies. Also, the availability of tax reliefs will depend on the investor's individual circumstances, and may be subject to change in the future. In addition, the availability of any tax relief depends on the investee companies maintaining their qualifying status. See below for important information and risk warning.
